ILLINOIS GOVERNOR SIGNS ANTIBULLYING LEGISLATION

Illinois Governor Pat Quinn signed the Prevent School Violence Act into law Sunday, Lambda Legal announced.

The LGBT rights organization applauded the Governor's initiative as a victory in an extensive fight to protect LGBT students against harassment in school.

"This law represents a great victory for students, parents and educators because it defines bullying for the first time in Illinois law and explicitly prohibits bullying based on actual or perceived sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression," said Christopher Clark, Lambda Legal senior Staff Attorney. "Our schools should be a place where all children, including LGBT students, can learn safely."
